August 11 and 18, 2007

CAAS Members and friends

We had a busy July with a meeting at the CAAS property and two outings at Wooly Hollow and Pinnacle Mountain.

August won’t be far behind. For our regular meeting scheduled for August 11, we will have a star gazing and meteor gazing evening starting at 8:00 pm. Plan on staying late to see the Perseids, all night if you like. There is a new moon on the 12th so there should be plenty of good star gazing with and without a telescope before the Perseids get going good.

August 18 will be another star Party at Pinnacle Mountain visitor center. We will have a short business meeting at 7:00 pm at the visitor center. John Reed will host a Planetarium show using Stellarium from 7:30 to 8:30 and we will start observing at 8:30. We will have a nice 6 day old moon and Jupiter to keep us busy until the stars come out.

Moon Party – All Are Invited!

Join CAAS and our good friends at Pinnacle Mountain State Park for our first Moon Party! Normally we would shun the full Moon and stay home and watch some cheesy movie on the SciFi channel but not this time. Saturday we will embrace all things Lunar as we dare to look directly at the Moon. Google Moon may say it is made of cheese but we think not and if you want proof just come join us at the Pinnacle Mountain State Park Visitor Center on Saturday July 28 at 8 PM! Free Moon Pies while supplies last.

Woolly Hollow State Park Star Party July 21, 2007

James Fisher, Pat Morris, Bill Sanders, Carl Freyaldenhoven, Donald and Carolaina Ferren, Jim Dixon and his children Jack & Samantha, Allan and Mary Frances Lee, Rocky and Carol Togni, David and Nightvid Cole from CAAS attended. Many members enjoyed a pot luck meal with Julie Lovett supplying a delicious Boston Butt. An estimated 75 park goers attended the event. The sky only partially cooperated in that clouds blocked about 50 percent of the sky at any time. However, for a time we were able to show the visitors Venus, Jupiter, the Moon, Albereo, Mizar & Alcor, some learned to identify the North Star and several other prominent stars. 5 people earned certificates for completing Scavenger Hunt. We also passed out moon diagrams and diagrams of different things one can see in the moon. Several prospects for new members attended and introduced themselves.
